What Is an Automated Waste Collection System?
An automated waste collection system, also called a pneumatic waste collection system or automated vacuum waste collection, moves refuse through a sealed underground or riser pipe network using negative air pressure instead of bins, trolleys and collection trucks. Residents or staff drop waste into an inlet; the system holds it above a discharge valve and, on a scheduled cycle, a vacuum station draws it through the pipework at high speed to a central collection point, where a cyclone separator drops the waste into sealed compacted containers for removal.
For a developer or building owner the appeal is operational: no bin rooms on every floor, no waste trolleys in service lifts, far fewer truck movements on site, better odour and pest control, and a measurable reduction in manual handling.
How an AWCS Works
- Inlets and load stations. Indoor chute hoppers, outdoor public-area inlets, or ward and kitchen inlets, often with volumetric control doors and key-operated access so waste fractions stay separated.
- Vertical chute and storage section. Waste falls by gravity and accumulates above a discharge valve between transport cycles.
- Discharge and air valves. The control system opens the discharge valve to release waste into the horizontal transport pipe while air-inlet valves admit atmospheric air to build transport velocity.
- Transport piping. Buried and riser steel pipework carries the waste stream. This is fully welded, pressure-critical pipework that must be leak-tested under vacuum.
- Vacuum or exhauster station. Industrial exhausters generate the negative pressure that moves waste through the network, over distances that can run to a kilometre or more.
- Cyclone separator. The air and waste stream decelerates and solids drop out of suspension.
- Compaction and sealed containers. A compactor loads waste into sealed roll-on roll-off containers for removal.
- Filtration and odour control. Dust filtration and deodorising treat the exhaust air before discharge, with noise attenuation at the plant room.
- Control system. A PLC sequences valves and cycles, while SCADA or HMI handles fill-level monitoring, fraction scheduling, alarms and fault logging.
Types of AWCS Configuration
- Gravity vacuum system. Gravity drop in the vertical section, vacuum transport in the horizontal. Common in residential towers, offices and hospitals, and able to handle general waste, food waste and linen.
- Full vacuum system. Vacuum throughout, typically used in commercial buildings where large bagged volumes are loaded at a station.
- Shuttle system. A carrier moves the waste rather than pure suction, reducing air volume and energy demand on shorter runs.
- Hybrid. Combinations of the above, used on large mixed-use developments and towers.
Our AWCS Engineering Scope
An AWCS is, mechanically, a welded pipe network with valves, rotating plant and a control system. That is the work Merit Berg has been doing for Malaysian manufacturers for over a decade. Below is the scope we take on.
Transport Pipework and Valve Installation
Fabrication and installation of transport pipework, pipe supports, thrust restraint and expansion provision, buried pipe laying and inspection chambers, riser pipework in building cores, and installation and alignment of discharge, air and sectioning valves. Where AWCS Is Used in Malaysia
Pneumatic waste collection has been deployed in Malaysia since the 1990s and is now found in landmark towers, transport hubs and master-planned developments. Publicly documented Malaysian installations include Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur, the klia2 main terminal building in Selangor, Aspen Vision City in Batu Kawan, Penang, and Terminal Bersepadu Gombak. Typical building types that suit an AWCS are:
- High-rise residential and serviced apartment towers
- Mixed-use and township-wide district systems
- Hospitals, where general waste, food waste and linen streams need separation and infection control
- Airports and transport interchanges
- Shopping malls and food-and-beverage-heavy commercial buildings
- Hotels and institutional campuses
Because Malaysia’s installed base is now decades old and concentrated with a small number of original suppliers, a large share of the current engineering need is maintenance, spare-part replacement, controls retrofit and obsolescence upgrade rather than greenfield installation.
AWCS, Green Building Credits and Standards
There is currently no Malaysian law that requires an automated waste collection system in a new development. It is a design choice, usually driven by operating cost, service-lift congestion, hygiene and green certification.
Under the Green Building Index Non-Residential New Construction tool, a central pneumatic waste collection system is named as a qualifying item for Innovation in Design and Environmental Design Initiatives credit, alongside related points for storage and collection of recyclables and construction waste management. Developers pursuing GBI or GreenRE certification should raise AWCS with their green consultant early, because the pipe routing has to be designed in.
On the engineering side, Malaysia has no dedicated national standard for pneumatic waste conveyance. Consultants working in this region generally reference Singapore Standard SS 642, the code of practice for pneumatic waste conveyance systems, which sets out pipe material, welding qualification, vacuum leak-test acceptance, dust filtration efficiency and plant noise limits. We work to those principles alongside the Uniform Building By-Laws provisions for refuse storage and the relevant local council requirements. For context on Malaysia’s wider waste regime, the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 applies in the Federal Territories and adopting states, but it does not mandate AWCS.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an automated waste collection system cost in Malaysia?
There is no single figure. Cost is driven by total pipe length, the number of inlets, the number of waste fractions, whether the run is buried across a township or contained in a single tower, and the size of the vacuum plant. Retrofit and maintenance scopes are priced very differently from new installations. We quote against a drawing set or a site survey.
Is an AWCS mandatory for new high-rise developments in Malaysia?
No. Malaysia has no national mandate. Singapore requires pneumatic waste conveyance for residential developments above a threshold number of units, and some Malaysian local authorities encourage it through development guidelines, but in Malaysia it remains a design decision that can earn green building credit.
Can an AWCS be retrofitted into an existing building?
Sometimes, but it is difficult and expensive. The vertical chute route, horizontal pipe route and a plant room of adequate size all have to exist or be created. Retrofit is far more common at the sub-system level: replacing valves, overhauling exhausters, or upgrading obsolete control hardware on a system that is already in place.
We already have a system from another vendor. Can you maintain it?
Yes. We are independent of the original equipment manufacturers. We can take on preventive maintenance, breakdown response, valve and seal replacement, exhauster overhaul and controls diagnostics on existing installations, subject to a site survey and any warranty conditions still in force.
What happens when the system blocks?
Blockages are usually caused by oversized or non-compliant items entering an inlet. The control system flags an abnormal cycle, the affected section is isolated, and the blockage is located and cleared at the nearest access point. A well-run system pairs clear resident guidance and inlet volumetric control with a maintenance contract that includes response times for blockage clearing.
How many waste fractions can the system handle?
Multi-fraction operation is standard. General waste, recyclables and food waste are commonly separated, and hospital systems often add a linen stream. Fractions are handled by scheduling the transport cycles and by access control at the inlets. Adding a fraction later is possible but should be planned into the original design.
What is the expected service life of the pipework and valves?
Steel transport pipework is a long-life asset when correctly specified and installed, while valves, seals, actuators, filters and exhauster bearings are consumable and follow a replacement schedule. Spare-part lead time is the practical constraint in Malaysia, which is why we recommend holding a critical spares list on site.
Can the system integrate with our building management system?
Yes. Fill levels, cycle status, alarms and fault logs can be exposed to a BMS or a central SCADA over standard industrial protocols, with remote alarm routing to the facilities team. This is a normal part of our controls scope.
